Comhar SDC moves to NESC
In January 2012, the sustainable development role performed by Comhar, the Sustainable Development Council (SDC), was integrated into the work of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC). NESC will now develop its work in a way that integrates sustainable development issues into its analysis of significant national challenges. More information can be found on www.nesc.ie.

Comhar SDC Sustainable Development Indicators Website
A new website on Sustainable Development Indicators has been developed by Comhar Sustainable Development Council (SDC). It is available at www.comharsustainableindicators.ie.
This new website enables people to see how Ireland is performing in relation to sustainable development. It features up-to-date information and graphs on 20 headline indicators which inform us about progress on sustainable development challenges including climate change and clean energy, sustainable travel, economic prosperity, sustainable consumption and production, conservation and management of natural resources, public health, sustainable communities, land use and global poverty.
The website has been designed for use by the general public, as well as second level students and teachers, third level students and lecturers and researchers. The website allows users to explore a range of different statistics relating to these challenges. Each indicator is displayed visually on a graph showing progress over time and Ireland is benchmarked against other countries and the EU average. It provides concise and up to date information on sustainable development in Ireland. There are also many resources and links available for further reading and learning.

Community based energy generation can play an important part in job creation, local income generation, enhancing support for renewable projects and ensuring community involvement in Ireland’s transition to a low carbon society.

The third European Week for Waste Reduction runs from 19th to 27th November 2011.
